2022-23 Academic HR Memos
Updated: June 2, 2023
The University continues to maintain an institutional membership with the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD). The Provost’s Office will contribute 50% of the cost associated with the NCFDD’s Faculty Success Program provided that the home unit or Dean’s Office contributes the remainder of the funds. Tenure stream faculty, tenured faculty, and part-time faculty in continuing appointments at the ranks of assistant professor, associate professor, and professor are eligible for funding. The Provost’s Office will also contribute 50% of costs associated with NCFDD’s Post-Tenure Pathfinders Program, again provided that the home unit or Dean’s Office contributes the remainder of the funds. Tenured (or soon-to-be tenured) Faculty Success Program alumni are eligible for funding.
Update on Merit (PTR/5%) for the 2022-23 Academic Year (PDAD&C #37) (May 5, 2023)
The University and UTFA have reached agreement that July 1, 2023 PTR will be paid to faculty and librarians in the July 2023 pay run. Both the PTR and 5% merit awards are based on the performance assessment for the 2022-23 year.
Faculty members who wish to retire on June 30, 2024 must give notice of their intention by June 30, 2023. This is the annual formal reminder of this deadline.
Implementation of Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Attestation (PDAD&C #20) (February 17, 2023)
In 2021, the University of Toronto (U of T) signed onto the Association of American Universities (AAU) Principles on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Academia, which provide that before finalising an offer of employment to a candidate for a faculty position, institutions contact prior employers to determine if there have been substantiated findings of sexual misconduct against the candidate while they were appointed as a faculty member at another institution. The University has been working to develop and implement a process in response to the recommendations and the AAU Principles starting in the 2022-23 academic year.
Further to PDAD&C #45 (dated February 12, 2021) and PDAD&C #24 (dated November 19, 2020), the University and the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA) have agreed that tenure committees may continue to convene virtually, and that the decision about whether or not to hold a Tenure Committee meeting in person or virtually is a decision that should be made by the Tenure Committee Chair in conversation with Committee members.
This memo contains important information concerning the retroactive payment of July 1, 2022, ATB increase and how this should be implemented.
Streamlining the Process for MRA Approvals for Teaching Stream Faculty (PDAD&C #4) (August 5, 2022)
Under this new arrangement, teaching stream faculty will automatically be provided with access to My Research Applications & Agreements (MRA) when they are hired, as is the case with tenure stream faculty.
